In the Union Budget 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed extending the existing basic customs duty (BCD) exemption on imports of goods required for nuclear power projects till September 30, 2035. This extension applies to all nuclear plants irrespective of capacity (including small modular reactors), with exemptions covering items like fuel elements, control rods, and other equipment under tariff items 8401 30 00 and 8401 40 00, set at zero rate. Approved projects registered with customs by that date will benefit, supporting India’s goal of expanding nuclear capacity to 100 GW by 2047.
